Do Now – 11/23 & 11/24 Take out your Constitution of Medina & Qur’an texts and a blank sheet of paper, if you haven’t already. You will have exactly 25 minutes to produce the best paragraph that you can to answer this prompt. I am not checking outlines, but it will be clear whether or not you use them. On the Spot Writing Have you:
Written 8-10 sentences on a sheet of paper, with an MLA Heading? Proofread using the green Grammar Checklist? DOUBLE CHECKED that there are no personal pronouns? Had a partner read your paragraph and revised based on their feedback? Submitted to the front bin? (No, I do not need your outline! ) What do I do when I’m done?? Take out a new Do Now/Exit Ticket sheet. Muhammad dies in 632. What happens next? (i.e., who takes power over the empire, does it continue to grow, etc.)

Our Goals Objectives Essential Questions SWBAT analyze a secondary source in order to summarize how Islam became an empire after the death of Muhammad in 632. What happens to the umma after Muhammad’s death? How does Islam become an empire?

Sunni/Shi’ah split When Muhammad died, Islam had become a political and religious empire. There was no clear instructions as to who would become Islam’s next leader, or how that would be decided.

There was a dispute over who was going to be the CALIPH, which is the political and religious leader Sunni Shi’ah/ Shi’a/Shi’ite

Four caliphs that followed the tradition of Muhammad, who were elected because they were capable: Abu Bakr ( A.D.) – chosen by Muhammad to be his successor ‘Umar (634 – 644 A.D.) - elected Uthman (644 – 656 A.D.) - elected Ali (656 – 661 A.D.) – chosen by his father and elected: When the split arose

Sunni/Shi’ah Sunni: Believed the prophet’s close followers should be the leaders, beginning with Abu Bakr, and that they should be elected by the umma Ultimately “won” the political power after several instances of assassinations/revenge Shi’ah Believed Muhammad’s family members, beginning with Ali, members should be the leaders Shi’ah call the people they believe to be the true leaders of Islam Imams Believe in a mystical quality-12th Imam is “hiding” and will one day return

End Result Ummayad Dynasty established in the midst of several civil wars over leadership – practice Sunni Islam (beliefs are slightly different) Two groups develop slightly different beliefs Sometimes two groups cooperate, sometimes they are violent (depending on the area, time period, etc.)
