Key Question: What is the relationship between force and distance for a lever?
2
What is a lever? A stiff structure that rotates around a fixed point called a fulcrum. Levers are practically useful for multiplying the force that can be applied to an object for changing the direction of the object.
3
First Class Lever Pliers are an example of a first class lever
The input and output forces are balanced on either side of the fulcrum.
4
Second Class Lever A wheelbarrow is an example of a second class lever. The output force is between the input force and the fulcrum (the wheel).
5
Third Class Lever Arms and legs are third class levers.
The input force is between the fulcrum and the output force.
6
What is the relationship between force and distance for a lever?
Mechanical advantage is the ratio of the length of the input arm over the length of the output arm. MA= Li / Lo
