Computer Power Savings Contemporary computers use 40-80 watts at idle, 100-200 watts at high load. In addition the monitor uses 30 (LCD) - 100 (CRT ) watts. Power saving options are: Monitor power down, hard disk power down, standby, hibernate, and shutdown.

Computer Power (Cont.) For a computer which uses 80 watts at idle, and with a 100 Watt CRT monitor, the annual cost (at ~26 cents/KWH) is: 1.Always on$400. 2.CRT & HD power down 1 hr.$200. 3.#2 + System Standby after 1 hr.$175. 4.#2 + System Hibernate after 1 hr.$ 67. 5.#2 + Power down overnight$120.
