Chapter 8 Final Exam Review
2
All the members of a species living in the same place at the same time.
Population The number of individuals per unit area or volume. Population density The relative distribution or arrangement of its individuals within a given amount of space. dispersion
3
A change in the size of a population over time.
Growth rate The birth rate minus the death rate. A method of calculating growth rate The fastest rate at which a population can grow. Biotic potential
4
The maximum number of offspring that each member can produce.
Reproductive potential The average time that it takes for a member of a population to reach a reproductive age. Generation time When populations grow faster and faster because they have plenty of food and space with little to no competition. Exponential growth
5
The maximum population that an ecosystem can support.
Carrying capacity The consumption of a natural resource by a species that occurs at the same rate at which the environment produces that resource. Limiting resource.
6
An area defended by one or more species from another.
Territory The unique role of a species within an ecosystem. Niche What are the five major types of species interaction? Competition, predation, parasitism, mutualism, commensalism
7
A relationship in which different individuals attempt to use the same limited resource.
Competition Competition between two species that never come into contact with each other. Indirect competition An organism that feeds on another organism. predator
8
An organism that is fed upon.
Prey An organism that lives in or on another organism and feeds on it. Parasite A close relationship between two species where they both benefit. mutualism
9
A relationship in which one species benefits and the other species is neither harmed nor helped.
Commensalism
