2/17/16 Agenda: Agenda Bell work BP - Natural Selection Activity 97- Eating for Energy Materials: Notebook & pencil Ecology and Evolution text DO: Today we will analyze the effects of an introduced species on energy transfer DQ: Draw an example of a food web for a pond community.

2 Activity 97- Origins of Species F-45
Adaptation: The process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment. Mutation:  occurs when DNA is damaged or changed in such a way as to alter the genetic message carried by that gene. Natural Selection: the process where organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.

3 Origins of Species Procedure: Read activity 97
Answer the Stopping to Think Questions in your science notebook Answer Analysis questions 1-3 in your science notebook. Finish power paragraph for field study – due at the end of class!

4 Final Summary Paragraph: Field Study
Final Summary Paragraph: Field Study 4 In addition to a 3, your paragraph goes above and beyond by comparing/contrasting desert breeze to another location (ex: your backyard) 3 Your topic sentence identifies the 3 traits and characteristics you are writing about (Ex: temperature, soil, animals) for all locations of the park Your yellow sentences give reasons/details/facts related to how one of the characteristics was similar or different for each of the locations (north, east, south, west side of the park) Your pink sentences give examples and/or a further explanation to support your yellow sentences. Your conclusion re-states your topic sentence in a way that sums up what you observed at the park. You have included proper transitions Your paragraph is free of convention errors and is highlighted appropriately 2 Some of the information listed above is missing/inaccurate/incomplete. There are many major convention errors & your paragraph is not highlighted appropriately

5 Reflection on Goal Score 4.0
In addition to Score 3.0, you can teach another student about classification, micro-life, and ecological relationships. Score 3.0 With no help, I understand today’s classification system & can classify organisms based on their similar characteristics. I can identify the characteristics that make up all living things and explain why viruses are not considered living I can identify the ways that bacteria, archaea and protists help/harm the environment I can explain and recognize the relationships between organisms and the environment (IE: predator/prey, food webs/chains, and symbiotic relationships) I can explain how populations are affected by water, limiting factors, human interactions, and carrying capacity. Score 2.0 With some help or at this time, I can partially complete the criteria for a 3. Score 1.0 With complete help or at this time, I am not able to complete the criteria for a 3
