The test… The simple past is a point in the past. “I ate breakfast this morning.” “I watched a movie last night.”

The test… The past perfect is the “past-past”. It shows that one event happened before another one in the past. “He had worked hard to get into the program.” “She had eaten breakfast before she left the house that morning.”

The test… The past continuous communicates something happening over time in the past. “I was speaking with Tom.” “I was learning to play the guitar.”

The test… The past perfect continuous expresses and event in the “past-past” that was happening over time. “I had been dieting for months when I finally gave in to temptation.” “I had been dreaming about seeing Paris all winter when I left for France last June.”

The test… Gerunds vs. Infinitives A gerund is an –ing form of a word that acts as a noun. An infinitive is “to” plus the verb. It also acts as a noun.
