20
What Do Maps Need?
21
Ways of Determining Different Places
Examples: Colours Lines Patterns That show us the different Countries Provinces Etc
23
Compass Rose Show us the Proper Directions
Typically in the top right or left hand corner of the map, but there no true rule
25
Legend (Key) This gives you the information needed for the map to make sense Explains what specific things on the map mean such as: Symbols Colours Lines
27
Some Writing (VERY LITTLE)
Typically to mark places that aren’t associated with the Legend Typically: Cities Oceans Etc.
29
Scale Unless a map is the EXACT SAME SIZE as the thing that you are mapping, you need a Scale The scale compares the Size of the Map to the Size of the place in Real Life It helps if you think of a map as sort of a MINIATURE version of the place in real life
31
Mr. Meyer’s Opinion NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE know about maps, geography, and even Canada for that matter Not just kids. Adults too! 20% of Canadians can’t locate it on a map Less than 50% can locate all of the Provinces 81% cannot locate Asian countries such as Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan We need to know more about the World!!!
