3 Firstly, what is the overall aim of the project.....?
“The final deliverable includes a report containing background information necessary for the elaboration of EU guidance documents on the correct implementation of the WFD and MSFD in relation to aquaculture.”

4 What is the aim of the workshop, & how you can help us?
For aquaculture, what are the issues in relation to environmental legislation in your country? [Principally in relation to WFD/MSFD.] Are there specific issues in relation to the implementation of these Directives? If so, what? What examples are there showing good practice in relation to: Legislative implementation; Industry environmental sustainability.

5 Context: Drivers for sustainable aquaculture development (EU, MSs - MANPs); Drivers are social (food security) and economic; Opportunities: expertise and natural resources across EU-28; Key point is the environmental protection and sustainability of the operations and industry across EU-28.

6 Project: Background Information for Sustainable Aquaculture addressing in particular Environmental Protection Project commissioned by DG ENV and DG MARE; 9 month project; Cefas contractor; Objective: Guidance document for environmental legislation in relation to sustainable aquaculture development.

7 Guidance Document Shall:
Outline how best to manage environmental impact of aquaculture activities; Support potential realisation of mutual benefits between aquaculture development and environmental protection; Complement Natura 2000 guidance.

8 Process Review available information (e.g. Env legislation & impacts, activities, industry needs, MSs regulations, RBMPs, science project reports, scientific literature, etc.); Consult (workshops, survey, draft guidance document); Produce Literature review; Draft guidance document; Present results to stakeholders Comments, etc., Final Guidance.

Share information relating to good practice (3 sessions): Examples of improving environmental performance in practice; Examples of sustainable aquaculture development; Examples of effective transposition & implementation of WFD/MSFD by MSs; We need your contributions!
