10 Exchange Database Availability Groups
Windows Server Management Marketing 7/25/2019 Exchange Database Availability Groups Automatic database-level recovery built into Exchange Database Availability Groups Boundary for mailbox database replication, database and server switchovers, failovers, and an internal component called Active Manager. Any server in a DAG can host a copy of a mailbox DB from any other server in the DAG. DAGs make use of Windows Server Failover Clustering capabilities such as the cluster heartbeat, cluster networks, and the cluster database. Once the DAG is configured, active mailbox databases on each server can be replicated to other DAG members for resilience against outages & flexible switchover for maintenance. 11 Windows Server Management Marketing
7/25/2019 Combining Clusters Dual-levels of resilience with Hyper-V & Exchange DAGs Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Failover Clustering at host level provides resiliency in the event of hardware failure. Supports Failover Priority to ensure Exchange Server VMs start first upon failover. Supports Anti-Affinity rules to keep Exchange DAG Member VMs on different physical hosts. Exchange Database Availability Group Recommended for Exchange data to be stored on Fixed virtual disks, local to the VM. Exchange VM virtual disks should be stored on resilient storage (SMB 3.0, iSCSI, FC) Exchange DAG nodes fully supported with Hyper-V Live Migration. 12 Integrated Cluster Maintenance
Windows Server Management Marketing 7/25/2019 Integrated Cluster Maintenance Cluster-Aware Updating ensures clusters stay patched & protected Hyper-V Host Maintenance Cluster-Aware Updating (CAU) will orchestrate the automatic Live Migration of Exchange VMs away from Hyper-V nodes that are ready to be patched. Node is placed into maintenance mode before patching, and removed upon completion. CAU can be manually triggered, or set to Self- Updating Mode for automated patching on a scheduled basis - daily, weekly, or monthly intervals CAU can also be extended to include 3rd party patches, hotfixes, firmware updates etc. CAU can be managed via PowerShell or through GUI. No downtime to the Exchange Virtual Machines whilst the process of patching the host is underway.
