A. Before and After Writing
Over 5000 years ago people discovered ways of writing This created ways of keeping records of their life How do we keep records of our lives??? This then developed history Time before writing records is known as Pre-History

Pre History: Digging up the Past
To learn about life in pre-historic times people called archeologists or scientists who examine objects to learn about cultures wrote them down in books They go on digs to search for ancient tools etc… The size of a stone spear might tell us how big the animal was that certain individuals were hunting

History: A record of writing
Historians also study written records to learn more about human life. From wars to religion to disease many ancient people would write about the good and bad times Today many write journals or diaries

Record of spoken word Written word often begins as oral traditions??? What are theses??? Stories, songs, music, tall tales… etc… Passed down by generations Oral traditions are still very important today Not all stories are accurate, over time people began to exaggerate and even change parts of stories completely

Linking Geography and History
Why study History?? Knowing when something happened is important What about birthdays, Christmas etc… Knowing connections between geography and history is often key to understanding why something happened Weather patterns, water supply, landscape, all effect the lives of those who live there

Good Example Why was Egypt So rich and luxurious and have a great economy The Nile river ran through Egypt, every year it flooded and the river would fertilize the land so well it would produce great crops when planted as farm land Plus the river provided water travel
