In 2001 Alice Sullivan conducted a questionnaire, with 465 pupils across 4 schools to test Bourdieu’s idea that pupil’s with cultural capital (knowledge, attitudes, values, language of the middle class) have an advantage in education.
Task: Write two questions that you could use in a questionnaire to try and assess a person’s level of cultural capital
Extension: Sullivan found that cultural capital only accounted for some of the differences in class achievement. Working class children who had the same level of cultural capital as their middle class peers still got poorer exam results in comparison. What factors could explain this?
