1 SQRS: On page 20, answer questions 10 & 21.
October 26, 2017 SQRS: On page 20, answer questions 10 & 21.

2 Brain Pop! Be prepared to answer questions at the end of the video.
I can explain the Law of Conservation of Mass

3 change in size, shape or state of matter but not its composition
sublimation deposition New materials are not formed. change in size, shape or state of matter but not its composition Same materials are present before and after the change. Physical Change melting ice burning wood cutting hair baking a cake dissolving sugar baking soda reacting with vinegar to produce carbon dioxide vaporization: liquid changing to a gas condensation: gas changing to a liquid sublimation: solid changes to gas deposition: gas changes to solid cutting, tearing, grinding or bending

4 substances are changed into different substances
New materials are formed. color change odor gas is produced formation of a solid temperature change not easily reversed Chemical Change Leaves changing color crumpling paper boiling water apple exposed to air carbonation in sodas baking cake, making pancakes butter melting fireworks metal rusting rotten eggs, spoiled food antacid tablet in water wood changing to ashes & gases

5 Comprehension Check…

6 Physical or Chemical Sort?
On page of your comp. book, draw a T-chart Chemical Change Physical Change Write each of these under the correct heading: 1. Tear Burn 2. Rust Decompose 3. Squeeze Explode 4. Dividing cookie dough 5. Chocolate chips melting on the stove. 6. Brush fire 7. Water forming on the outside of a cold glass 8. A furniture make uses a piece of sand paper to make a chair more smooth.

7 Conservation of Mass During a chemical change, the particles rearrange to form new substances, but they are not destroyed and new particles are not created. The number and type of particles remains the same. This is the Law of Conservation of Mass: the total mass of the matter is the same before and after a physical or chemical change.

8

9 Is this a physical or chemical change?

10 Now you do it… Classwork/Homework: Identifying if the change is a physical or chemical change. Do this on your own. If you have any questions, raise your hand.

11 Exit Ticket Put your first & last name on your exit ticket!
Give 3 examples of a physical change. Give 3 examples of a chemical change. Fill in the blanks… In a chemical reaction, ____________is neither _______________nor ______________, it is _____________ Into something else.
