Physical/Chemical Change Whatley/Dey 2014
2
Physical Properties An aspect of matter that can be measured or observed without changing the substances composition.
3
Example: density = mass/volume
4
Chemical Property The ability of a substance to change in the presence of other substances.
5
Let’s Look More Closely:
Consider the following description of the following unknown substance: “It is a green liquid at room temperature. It vaporizes readily to form a greenish vapor. It boils at C and freezes at -36 C. The density of the vapor is 8.72 g/L, and the density of the liquid is 4.32 g/ml (at 25.0 C). The element reacts with many metals including iron and aluminum and it combusts in the presence of oxygen.” Indicate which properties in this description are physical and which are chemical.
6
Physical and Chemical Change
Physical change: No new substance created! Chemical Change: A new substance is created!
