Chapter 4: Cells Section 6: Fermentation Ferment-ation When oxygen levels are low, cells can’t use aerobic processes, like cellular respiration. Instead, they switch to anaerobic processes to make ATP (energy). Glycolysis is anaerobic, but it needs to recharge after each cycle.

Chapter 4: Cells Section 6: Fermentation Ferment-ation Fermentation is the process that allows glycolysis to continue. After glycolysis breaks glucose into 2 pyruvates, fermentation happens. During fermentation, pyruvate is converted to one of either two things: Lactic acid (in animals) Ethanol (in plants and fungi)
