5 Chapter 4: Cells and Energy
Section 6: Fermentation Fermentation!

6 Chapter 4: Cells Section 6: Fermentation Ferment-ation When oxygen levels are low, cells can’t use aerobic processes, like cellular respiration. Instead, they switch to anaerobic processes to make ATP (energy). Glycolysis is anaerobic, but it needs to recharge after each cycle.

7 Chapter 4: Cells Section 6: Fermentation

8 Chapter 4: Cells Section 6: Fermentation Ferment-ation Fermentation is the process that allows glycolysis to continue. After glycolysis breaks glucose into 2 pyruvates, fermentation happens. During fermentation, pyruvate is converted to one of either two things: Lactic acid (in animals) Ethanol (in plants and fungi)

9 Electron Transport Chain
Chapter 4: Cells and Energy Section 6: Fermentation 2 ATP! With O2 Cellular Respiration 2 ATP! Electron Carriers! (NADH) Electron Carriers (NADH) Electron Transport Chain 32-34 ATP!

10 Without O2 OR Chapter 4: Cells and Energy Lactic Acid Ethanol
