LEARNING TARGET: I understand the relationship between distance, time and speed. I can explain the relationship Mar 19 / Act E 74 Measuring Speed CH Q How can you measure the speed of a moving cart? VOCAB: Next slide
3
Distance Error Rate speed Time interval Review: variable(s); evidence length measurement (beginning to end) inaccuracy (in measurement) ratio of one thing compared to another (given later) measurement from start to stop
4
DISCUSSION How did people measure speed before electronic devices were invented? how many days (or approximate hours) it took by walking / horseback / sailing, etc. a distance 2. What are the components for measuring speed? Distance and time interval 3. Based on the above answer, can you determine a formula for determining the speed of an object? Think car when driving, how do you measure that? Miles per hour or MPH Speed = distance / time
5
DISCUSSION (cont) Using the formula for speed, what is the speed of a car that travels 100 miles in 2 hours? Speed = distance / time 100 miles _________ = 50 miles / hour (MPH) 2 hours
6
PROCEDURE AND DATA MATERIALS: PROCEDURE: Read on pg. E 8-10 and summarize DATA: WS Cart Speed Pre-lab thought: Why are we doing 3 trials?
7
ANALYSIS - Discuss and answer Q 2 & 5 on pg. E 10 ANS CH Q How can you measure the speed of a moving cart? A: measure time it takes to go a known distance (vocab) Speed = distance / time or S = d / t HOMEWORK Bring Glue Sticks / scissors
