A journey to a place of special significance, whether because of historical events, a figure who lived there or even a geographical figure. The importance of pilgrimage is not just arriving at the cite but also the journey.
How is it not tourism? Of course it is in many ways. Travel to destination buy souvenirs to remember trip by, then return home.. Main difference I would argue is exploration, exploration of the self and determination of self identity that comes with pilgrimage.
