Figure 1 The subendometrial myometrium is composed of muscle cells, seen at MRI as a low signal intensity zone, the junctional zone (JZ). Thickened JZ are used for diagnosis of adenomyosis. The thickness was measured at the thinnest (JZmin) and thickest (JZmax) part in the sagittal slices. The difference between JZmax and JZmin are called JZdif. Receiver operating characteristics curve illustrating sensitivity (%) and 1 − specificity (%) for identification of patients with adenomyosis for different cutoff levels of JZmax and JZdif. The numbers alongside the curves indicate JZmax and Jzdif, respectively, measured in millimeters. Dueholm. Image diagnosis of adenomyosis. Fertil Steril 2001. Figure 2 Transvaginal sonograms of representative patients with adenomyosis demonstrating (A) myometrial cyst heterogeneity and (B) areas of increased and decreased echogenicity with small myometrial cysts. Figure 3 Magnetic resonance images of uteri with adenomyosis. The high intensity central signals represent the endometrium, whereas the low intensity inner myometrial layers are the junctional zones (JZ). (A), The difference between findings of myomas and adenomyosis are demonstrated. A myoma (posterior–inferior myometrial wall in right side of the picture) had well-defined borders and low-signal intensity, and findings of adenomyosis (posterior and anterior JZ) had not uniformly thickened, not well-demarcated JZ of low signal intensity in the myometrium. (B, C, D, E), Irregular thickened JZ; (C, D, E) seen with small foci of high intensity. Dueholm. Image diagnosis of adenomyosis. Fertil Steril 2001. Fertility and Sterility , DOI: ( /S (01) )
