Define nationalism. How did nationalism lead the countries of Africa to reject European rule? Answer: Nationalism is a belief that the people of a country should govern themselves (pride in one’s own country). Nationalism led to the desire to govern their own countries without European involvement.

How is the role of citizen participation different in autocratic and democratic governments? Answer: Autocratic – citizens participate little or not at all; one ruler makes all the decisions, he/she has the final say with no one checking his/her power Democratic – citizens participate in their gov. and have a say in decisions (voting); the power of the gov. rests in the hands of the people
