1 “Hurricane Matthew: US evacuations begin ahead of storm”

2 Hurricane Matthew likely won't strike the US for another day -- but after seeing its devastating impact on Haiti, many are not taking chances. They've raided stores for supplies, waited in seemingly endless gas station lines and evacuated their homes as the storm threatens much of the East Coast. After its harsh winds and heavy rains assailed Caribbean nations, Hurricane Matthew continued early Wednesday its march toward the US. Forecasters predict it will be a Category 4 hurricane by the time it brushes up against the East Coast -- including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina -- sometime between Thursday evening and Saturday. The Hurricane Center said the storm could make landfall in any of those states. State officials this week have warned residents and visitors of potential dangerous times ahead. So far, Florida gas stations attendants have seen long lines, South Carolina motorists have endured heavy gridlock on highways and North Carolina tourists have been told to cut their vacations short. The top priority for each of these states is to ensure that they did not add to Matthew's death toll, which has climbed to seven people by late Tuesday.

3 In Other News For one night, Mike Pence put a calmer, gentler face on the 2016 Republican ticket. And Tim Kaine's pestering style helped him do it. But the Indiana governor's big night in Tuesday's vice presidential debate might not transfer to his running mate, Donald Trump. Kaine -- Hillary Clinton's number two -- spent his night throwing all of Trump's most politically damaging lines at Pence and asking him to explain them. For the most part, Pence passed, dismissing his "pre-done lines" and "insult-driven campaign." The 2016 Nobel Prize for Chemistry has been awarded to three molecular scientists who developed the world's smallest machines. The prize went to Jean-Pierre Sauvage of the University of Strasbourg in France; Sir James Fraser Stoddart of Northwestern University in the United States, and Bernard L Feringa of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands for the "design and synthesis of molecular machines” "The 2016 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry have miniaturized machines and taken chemistry to a new dimension," The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in a statement.
