1. Extracellular recording apparatus.
Extracellular recording apparatus. We performed en passant extracellular recordings from the antennal nerve while simultaneously bending the antenna flagellum at prescribed position and velocities with a voice coil actuator to simulate the animal encountering wall projections. A linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) sensor, mounted in parallel with the actuator, measured the actual position of the wall. We fixed the legs and body of the animal to a platform with insect pins. The head, scape and pedicel segments of the antenna were fixed with glue. The inset shows the recording site at the base of the antenna, relative to anatomical landmarks of the cockroach.
