Aim: How are Maps used? Do Now: Answer the following questions in your notebooks. - What situations might you find yourself in where a map would be helpful? - Are there different kinds of maps?

A globe is a spherical model of Earth.
What is the true shape of Earth? What object best represents this true shape of Earth? Oblate Spheroid Ping-Pong ball A map is a flat model of Earth.

Maps cause there to be errors in shape, size and distance of the land masses.
WHY? Is Greenland as large as the U.S? Is Antarctica this big?

I. Legends explains what objects or features the symbols represent on the map. All legends should have: - scale - compass

A. Scaling The scale relates to a distance between two points on a specific map. With a ruler, it can be used to find accurate distances on a map 0.5 1 Kilometer 1 Mile

B. Compass Never Eat Shredded Wheat
The compass rose gives us directions North, South, East and West, based on the orientation of the map. Never Eat Shredded Wheat
