2 Opposition to the Abolitionist Movement
Negative reactions in the NORTH in the SOUTH Some northern factories relied on cotton from the south Some northerners were afraid that if slaves were freed, they would come north and take jobs from white citizens. The southern economy relied on slave labor Life with slaves was the only life southerners knew up to that point

3 SECTIONALISM: feeling of loyalty to a particular section of a country; rather than the country as a whole. How do you think the abolitionist movement affected sectionalism? The abolitionist movement affected sectionalism by increasing tension between the north (anti-slavery) and the south (pro- slavery)

4 The Underground Railroad in New York
We don’t know for sure where all of the Underground RR stations are because it was dangerous to help and hide runaway slaves. The locations were kept secret.

Some abolitionists also joined the women’s rights movement because they did not have full social and political rights themselves!

The first women’s rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848

8 3. How did the Declaration of Sentiments differ from the Declaration of Independence?
The Declaration of Sentiments was different from the Dec of Indep. because it began “we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men and women are created equal.”

13 Concluding Question:   What differences existed between ordinary Americans living in the North and those living in the South in the years before the Civil War? Northerners were against slavery and wanted a strong federal government. Southerners were in favor of slavery and wanted state governments to have more power than the federal government.

21 May is Military Appreciation Month
Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month in 1999 to ensure the nation was given the chance to publicly show their appreciation for troops past and present. We remember the important role the U.S. Armed Forces have played in the history and development of our country. Please bring in a photo of a service member by this Friday ! The photo will be included in a display showing our appreciation for our military service members.
