Schedule Changes Info Level up - students may level up ASAP if they have the grades, test history, motivation and/or teacher recommendation to take on the challenge. Let's get those done ASAP. Level down - students must wait until the end of the first 9 weeks before leveling down. Please do not sign a level down schedule change request because it leads to disengagement from the student who might not have the option of leveling down at the end of the first nine weeks. Mistakes - we will certainly review situations where a student is not placed in the correct course. Elective Changes - not happening.

The Tragedy of Othello: The Moor of Venice
22
Keys to Understanding Othello
The major characters: Othello, Desdemona, Iago. The secondary characters: Cassio, Emilia, and Roderigo. The play’s tragic movements. What makes the play tragic is the key players not asking the right questions. The exploitation of race is a topic uncommonly discussed in Elizabethan times. Symbolic art – medieval art—focus on universals (archetypes) by presenting them through the particulars. Villain: In a symbolic work the villain is not just one bad guy. He would represent evil in the world. It is the symbolism in action that represents the evil. Conversely the halo represents holiness—good.
23
Characters Othello – the tragic figure---the general, well-respected by the Venetian Senate, educated, a Moor (black). In giving the lead to a person of color, Shakespeare was reacting against the conventions of the period, which equated beauty to whiteness. Do we still equate beauty to whiteness?
24
Characters Desdemona – Othello’s wife, whom he loves, daughter to the senator Brabantio (so we know she isn’t “trash.” Do you think her father, Brabantio, a senator, would have a problem with his daughter eloping and marrying a man of color? She is beautiful, loyal wife who loves her husband---very sophisticated.
25
Characters Brabantio – Desdemona’s father, Venetian Senator.
26
Characters Iago – the villain, hates Othello (why?), he is believed to be honest. Perhaps we see Iago as Machiavellian meaning the employment of cunning and duplicity in statecraft or in general conduct. The idea here is that people were by nature untrustworthy, malevolent and self- serving, and thus those in power could only maintain their position through exploitative and deceitful actions. We need to figure out if Iago is a plausible character.
27
Characters Cassio is Othello’s lieutenant, shallow character.
Roderigo – is the suitor to Desdemona, foppish, foolish.
28
Characters Emilia- Iago’s wife. She will have her moment of truth later in the play. Bianca- courtesan in Cyprus; prostitute of sorts
