1. The variation (strange traits) were caused by _____________________. 2.In this environment, the mutation that was advantageous was ____________. 3.This mutation was helpful because ______________________________ 4.The mutation was passed down to their offspring because _____________________

21 good bad more food more protection less food less protection
Mutations lead to different traits. If the mutation is… .. then the organism gets… … and therefore makes… more food more protection more offspring & therefore is MORE FIT good less food less protection less offspring & therefore is LESS FIT bad

23 The Evolution of the Giraffe
Millions of years ago, the ancestors of giraffes had short necks, and ate mostly grass. But due to random mutations, there was variation. Some had slightly longer necks. The ones with slightly longer necks were able to compete by eating the leaves from trees. In this environment, longer necks were an advantage, so they were able to survive and reproduce more. Over millions of years, the giraffes with shorter necks died out, while the longest necks reproduced and passed down their traits to their offspring. That is how the giraffe evolved and why today, we have giraffes with very long necks.
