1. Robert Hooke (1665) - English Scientist that viewed the first cell from a thin slice of cork
He coined the term “cell” because the small units reminded him of monk cells in a monastery

2. Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1674) – Dutch businessman who made/improved microscopes, and is credited with seeing the first LIVING cells from pond water and blood
van Leeuwenhoek is sometimes referred to the “Father of Microbiology”

4. Theodore Schwann (1839) – German zoologist who stated that all animals are made of cells

Cells are the smallest parts of a living thing that are built a specific way (structure) to do a specific job (function)
Cells are the smallest things that have all 4 characteristics of life (R.O.A.D.)

8. Who was Robert Hooke and why was he important?
He discovered cells looking at a piece of cork with a microscope and was the first to use the name “cells”
