Multiple Sclerosis

Definition A disease in which your immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers your nerves.

Symptoms Numbness or weakness in one or more limbs that typically occurs at one side of your body at a time

Causes The damage to the myelin sheath. This sheath is the protective covering that surrounds nerve cells. When the nerve covering is damaged, nerve signals slow down or stop.

Risk Factors Age- MS can occur at any age, but most commonly affect the age of people between 15 and 60 Race- White people particular those of northern European descendent are of the highest risk of getting MS, people of Asian and African American have the lowest chance Climate- MS is far more common in temperate climate, including southern Canada, northern United States, and New Zealand

Complications Muscle stiffness or spasms
Paralysis, typically in the legs Problems with bladder, bowel or sexual function
