Unit 4- Structure and Function- Cells

Abiotic – not derived from living organisms; not living or never alive
Biotic – relating to or resulting from living things

Cell theory - all organisms are composed of one or more cells, the cell is the basic unit of structure and function and cells arise from pre- existing cells.

Cell - the basic unit of structure and function in living organisms

Cytoplasm - fluid that surrounds the organelles
Organelle - differentiated structure within a cell that performs a specific function Cytoplasm - fluid that surrounds the organelles Jello is the cytoplasm and the fruit are the organelles

Nucleus - controls functions of cells and contains genetic material

Mitochondria - an organelle which takes in nutrients, breaks them down and creates energy Also known as the powerhouse of the cell.

Cell wall - gives structure to plant cells
Cell membrane - controls what goes into and out of the cell

Chloroplast - site of photosynthesis in plant cells

Vacuole - storage area for cells; water storage in plants

Multicellular – made of many cells

Unicellular – made of one cell

Organism – any living thing

Reproduction – to make a copy of something
