Predictions TS: expand even more West – to the Pacific. Good for Americans – more space for homes and farms GW: 1800s will be setting up the country for a Civil War. Country fights against itself. War of separation but don’t separate. Otherwise it’s a revolution. SS: Towards Washington and Oregon. The beginning of the Oregon Trail. What is the relationship between expansion and the Civil War? JP: When the US expanded, some states were against slavery. Others were for it. Caused a tension between North and South. Southern states wanted NEW STATES to have slavery and the North didn’t. Why does this matter? AK: If the South or North had more states, it would be unfair. The South could get more power, for example. IF the South wanted something and the North didn’t, the South would win. Most likely they would want two very different things because their lifestyles are different. Ex: the whole country could become geared towards farming if the South had more power.
