2 The Temple Address (2) Jeremiah chapters 9-10

3 The Temple Address Jeremiah Laments
He is full of sorrow (8:18) He imagines the voice of Israelite captives in a foreign land wondering if the Lord is not there. He hears the voice of God musing: "Why have they provoked Me to anger with their carved images— with foreign idols?"  And he hears the lament of the captives: "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved!"  He mourns in shock for what is to happen to his people (8:21) He wonders if there is no medicine or healer who could yet cure his people (8:22) 3

4 The Temple Address Deceit brings Destruction and Lamentation
Jeremiah is “torn between sorrow and frustration” – He laments both the evil & the destruction of his nation (9:1-2) God must punish this nation of deceivers (9:3-9) How do the deceitful hearts of the people affect their relationships with one another and with God? The nation will be left desolate and its inhabitants scattered because of their disobedience and idolatry (9:10-16) The devastation evokes mourning (9:17-22)

5 The Temple Address Deceit brings Destruction
Men should not glory in their own gifts, but in knowing God as a God of both LOVE and JUSTICE (9:23-24) The truth of this passage is reiterated for Christians in Corinthians 1:26-31 God will punish ALL of the uncircumcised (9:25-26) What does it mean to be circumcised in the heart? (Deut. 10:16; Leviticus 26:41 [14-42], Ezekiel 44:7-9; Acts 7:51) Deuteronomy 10:16  Therefore circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be stiff-necked no longer. Ezekiel 44:7-9  When you brought in foreigners, uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, to be in My sanctuary to defile it—My house—and when you offered My food, the fat and the blood, then they broke My covenant because of all your abominations.  8  And you have not kept charge of My holy things, but you have set others to keep charge of My sanctuary for you."  9  Thus says the Lord GOD: "No foreigner, uncircumcised in heart or uncircumcised in flesh, shall enter My sanctuary, including any foreigner who is among the children of Israel. Acts 7:51  "You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.

6 The Temple Address Warnings against Worldliness (10:1-25)
The house of Israel is warned against being influenced by the pagan culture around them (10:1-3; Romans 12:1-2; Matthew 6:7-8) Man-made idols are powerless and should not be feared; God is all-wise and should be feared (10:3-7) Idols must be made by men, but the Lord is the maker of all things! (10:8-16) Note that God is referred to as the “Portion of Jacob” (v. 16; 51:19; Lamentations 2:24; Psalm 16:5; 73:26; 119:57). What has the Lord provided Israel? What have idols provided? Lamentations 3:24  "The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I hope in Him!“ Psalms 16:5  O LORD, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot. Psalms 73:26  My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalms 119:57  You are my portion, O LORD; I have said that I would keep Your words.

7 The Temple Address Warnings against Worldliness (10:1-25)
Jeremiah is hurt by the prospect of the destruction of Judah; he pleads with the Lord for ultimate justice upon the godless nations who would make Judah desolate (10:17-25) Jeremiah 10:23 is a well known verse. What is its meaning in the context? What is Jeremiah asking God to do when His people are walking in the path of error? (cf. 10:24)
