4 8. Diffusion cannot take place in a solid substance because it can only occur in fluids (liquids and gasses) where the molecules can move freely. 9. Oil (C6H14) will not dissolve in water because it is a covalent compound and it has neutral charges. Covalent compounds do not have charges that the Polar water molecules can attract to pull the substance apart.

5 10. When a chemical change occurs a totally new substance with different chemical and physical properties is created. The evidence that a chemical change occurred includes smoke, flame/sparks, gasses are produced, a temperature change (colder or hotter), and formation of new substances. During a physical change only physical properties are altered. The substance remains the same.

All matter is composed of atoms and molecules that behave like tiny particles that are always in motion. 2. If you increase the temperature of these tiny particles they will move faster. 3. At the same temperature, the more massive particles will move slower than the less massive particles. 4. Particles move from and area of high concentration to and area of low concentration until equilibrium is reached.
