High melting point, since palm oil is semi-solid at room temperature, it has a variety of uses from baking products and spreads to frying. Though animal fats also have this quality, they are far more expensive to produce. Cheap production – can use the see stone as well as the flesh

11 SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL CHALLENGE
Increase demand for sustainable palm oil in the UK market Over the last 4 years Chester Zoo have been working towards this goal. I hope to explain how transformative this project has been for us as an organisation and some of the key characteristics of our campaign that have led to it’s success. Finally I’ll discuss why we decided to create the ‘palm oil city’ project and our progress so far.

15 FIRST STEP: RESEARCH An investigation into the knowledge and use of sustainable palm oil in Winchester 80% of respondents had no knowledge of palm oil as an environmental issue Around 40% were unsure whether palm oil was found in their products or not. Multiple barriers were preventing them from using sustainable palm oil within their restaurants, with the biggest barriers highlighted as Cost Availability Knowledge High willingness to engage with us on the topic from local restaurants Over 60% of respondents answered positively

Send a Palm Oil Audit form to your suppliers. STEP 5 Repeat the audit every year and ensure that any new products that you source are sustainable.

We’ve got 5 different stars of criteria which reflect different areas such as star 2 = 5 workplaces and star 5 = 3 manufacturers
