1 Concluding Remarks I hope that this conference has been an enjoyable and rewarding experience for you. I would like to thank the planning committee Gemma Miner (please stand), Darlene McIntyre, JoLynn Miller, Annette Leeland and Richard Enfield for all of their hard work over the last six months. Clearly, the time and money invested in this conference was to provide all of us with the resources needed to strengthen, grow and sustain the 4-H YDP program statewide.

2 As the keynote mentioned we all need to keep forefront in our minds – our why? What is your spark, passion or interest that motivates you and keeps you doing what you do for 4-H! What is your why? Mine is the young people of our state. It would be my dream for all young people in CA to experience and be touched by the power of 4-H.

3 Our keynote also reminded us that for champions change is not an option. Champions strive to make the best better, this requires us to continually change and improve. And, 4-H is an organization of champions. However, it will take all of us to strengthen, grow and create a sustainable 4-H program. It will take a championship team!

4 Case for Change Decreased capacity due to budget and staffing patterns
Implementation of statewide program locally Decrease in # of 4-H Adult Volunteers Decrease in # of 4-H Youth Members Need for programs to evolve to meet needs of young people, their families, and our communities I believe we are at a unique place in our history. There are several factors listed here (as we discussed yesterday) that point to our need to do something different, to evolve, and to create a future for the 4-H YDP.

5 Enrollment Statistics
Year Youth Members (club only) Youth Members (all delivery modes) Adult Volunteers 1979/1980 53,053 95,127 21,003 2011/2012 31,577 72,436 13,400 Δ 21,476 22,619 7,603 Our enrollment statistics are one of these indicators.

6 We are going to have to make the 4-H’s relevant for today’s youth
We are going to have to make the 4-H’s relevant for today’s youth. We cannot use eight track methods to reach today’s ipod youth. We need to meet youth and all of our clientele where they are at.

7 Creating our Future Creating a volunteer middle management system to help expand the reach of paid staff, provide opportunities for volunteers, and grow and sustain our program. I truly believe that our success over the next 100 years will depend on our ability to … And, a key part of this will be attracting new volunteers to 4-H. These two steps are critical to developing a dynamic program that meets the needs of youth, our families and communities. This conference presents a first step in our new era in CA 4-H focused on growth and sustainability.

8 Thank you for spending your time with us here the past three days and for all of your contributions. You are truly valued as leaders in our program. Can everyone please raise your glass and toast with me to the next 100 years! Thank you!
