Terminology Sequence – ordered list of numbers that often form a pattern. 2, 4, 6, 8, … 6 is a term of the sequence. More specifically, 6 is the 3rd term of this sequence.
4
Example 1 Describe a pattern in each sequence
Example 1 Describe a pattern in each sequence. What are the next two terms of each sequence. Ex. 1a) 5, 11, 17, 23, … Ex. 1b) 400, 200, 100, 50, … Ex. 1c) 2, -4, 8, -16,… Ex. 1d) -15, -11, -7, -3, ….
5
Arithmetic sequence – Add or subtract a number each time.
Common difference – (d) = + or - a # Ex. 2 Tell whether the sequence is arithmetic. If it is, then what is the common difference? 2a) 8, 15, 22, 30, …. 2b) 7, 9, 11, 13, … 2c) 10, 4, -2, -8, … 2d) 2, -2, 2, -2,…
6
Rule for an Arithmetic Sequence
7
Ex. 3 Write a function rule to represent it.
2b) 7, 9, 11, 13, … 2c) 10, 4, -2, -8, …
8
Ex. 4 Find the second, fourth and eleventh terms of the sequence described by …
A(n) = -7 + (n-1)(5)
