Critical Thinking This is seemingly an odd Question, but there is a perfectly good Answer. You will have 3 minutes to come up with the answer. Work alone, and make sure you can give me the answer and the reason why.
2
The Situation A man builds a house rectangular in shape. All sides have southern exposure. A bear walks by the house. What color is the bear? Why?
3
The Answer For all four sides of the house to receive southern exposure, the house would have to be on the north pole! With this being the case, the bear must be white.

Goals for the Day I can analyze multiple rhetorical choices an author makes throughout a text and assess how they work together to create a common argument, purpose, and tone.

Voice Lessons - Syntax Consider:
The seven years’ difference in our ages lay between us like a chasm: I wondered if these years would ever operate between us as a bridge. - James Baldwin, “Sonny’s Blues” Discuss: What function does the colon serve in this sentence? How would the meaning and impact of the sentence change if the sentence read as follows: The seven years’ difference in our ages lay between us like a chasm, and I wondered if these years would ever operate between us as a bridge. Apply: Write two independent clauses; join the two with a colon, giving emphasis to the independent clause which follows the colon. Use Baldwin’s sentence as a model. Share your sentence with the class.

Open Rhetorical Device Book - Hypophora
Turn to page 26. What is hypophora? Underline it. What are its uses? Highlight in one color Is there anything we should be cautious of when using hypophora? Highlight it in a different color. Look at the exercise on page There are two examples of hypophora. Identify the two questions that are asked and the answer given to each.

Hypophora Hypophora: The technique of asking a question, then proceeding to answer it. This is a useful strategic device when writing essays to inform or persuade. Use #1: to introduce a paragraph. Use #2: to guide your reader from point to point to make sure they are following. Use #3: to anticipate questions or concerns you think your reader might raise. By addressing these concerns directly, you help strengthen your case. By phrasing them in question form first, you make it clear that you understand your reader’s thought process. Use #4: to help your reader feel directly involved in the discussion Use #5: to help introduce important information without making it seem like you’re forcing it upon them to readers who might know too little about the topic. Phrasing it as a question leads your readers to feel as if they thought of it – making your answer seem like something they always wanted to know.

Exercise 1 Why have I come to Birmingham?
I am here because I was invited here as a the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. So, I am here because I have organizational ties here. I am here because injustice is here. I am here because I am compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own home town, much like the Apostle Paul was compelled to carry the gospel of Jesus Christ to the far corners of the Roman world. I am here because your city’s white power structure left the Negro community with no other alternative. I am here because you say you deplore demonstrations taking place in Birmingham, but you fail to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations.

Exercise 1 Why are you taking direct action, using sit-ins, marches, and so forth? Isn’t negotiation a better path? I am using direct action to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community who has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront these issues. I am using direct action to dramatize the issue so that it can no longer be ignored. I am here because you and your white leaders have forced me to be here and because you have refused to negotiate (implied).
