Year 12 A Level Art Summer Task 2019
Seeing art first hand is great experience and much better than seeing it in books or on the internet. It is important to visit galleries and exhibitions during your course not only to get a feel for scale, media, colour etc. but also to gain ideas for your own work.
Task 1 – Visit a gallery/exhibition (This may be a local gallery or further afield.)
Select a piece of work that you find inspiring.
You need to explain where the exhibition was and what it was called, title of the work, name of the artist, date created, media used etc. (collect leaflets etc.)
You must make a detailed sketch of the artwork whilst you are in the gallery
Take a photograph(s) of the exhibition/selected work (if this is allowed!).
Task 2 – Presenting your work (show your creative skills)
Your work should be presented as 4 x A3s or an A1 sheet (this can be collect from the Art Department if needed). Present the work you did at the gallery, plus what is listed below.
An analysis of your chosen art work (minimum 500 words) use the question prompts to help you analyse the work
Collect further examples of the artists work (minimum of 3)
Make either a detailed artist copy or create an interpretation relating to the artist work (A4/A5 size).

2. Analysis Question prompts
Is it functional or decorative?
Does it convey social, moral or religious concerns?
Who was it made for?
Has the artist/craftsperson used imagined or remembered ideas?
Has the artist/craftsperson distorted, exaggerated or abstracted images
Why do you think they have used their subject matter in that way and to what effect?
Is the subject matter ‘surface deep’ – applied decoration; or are there deeper hidden meanings, symbols, analogies or metaphors?
What do you like about it? Is there anything you dislike? Why?
How has the work been arranged or made?
Is there a contradiction between the form of the art work and its subject or content?
Is the colour harmonious or contrasting? What colour theory has been applied?
Is there colour dominance and does it have a symbolic meaning?
Is there a principle shape or collection of shapes, lines, rhythms or forms? Do these determine the overall form of the work?
Is there texture?, is there textural variations?
What materials, tools, technologies and processes did the artist use?
Did the artist use supporting studies, drawings, photographs,?
How does the work affect you?
Does it capture a mood, feelings or emotions?
Is the work disturbing, peaceful, happy, sad, relaxing, etc.?
How does the work inspire you?
