Monique Marquez Physical Description of Roger Chillingworth Back in england- Intellectual, studios,Calm & Quite A pure and upright man, a decent husband for hester “There she beheld another countenance, of a man well stricken in years, a pale, thin, scholar- like visage, with eyes dim and bleared by the lamplight that had served them to pore over many ponderous books.” (Hawthorne 55) First encounter- “ Again, at the first instant of perceiving that thin visage, and the slight deformity” (Hawthorne 57) Small in stature, aged white man & intelligence in his features Throughout the story- Physical stature grows uglier throughout the story

7 Conclusion of Chillingworth Bianca Lopez
Chillingworth’s deformity manifests his malicious character. He exhibits this malicious character by psychologically torturing Dimmesdale. “Would he not suddenly sink into the earth, leaving a barren and blasted spot, where, in due course of time would be seen deadly nightshade, dogwood, henbane.”(Hawthorne 158) ~The three plans that Hawthorne lists connote witchcraft and the mischievousness and wickedness of Chillingworth’s character. Although he has exhibited neglect toward Pearl and Hester, towards the end of the book he shows Compassion towards them, compensating for his Past actions
