1 Today’s Agenda…12-10 Bellringer: What is a model? What are they used for? Book on page 288 Notes on Inside the Earth BrainPop Quiz on BrainPop

2 Inside the Earth Study Pack #2

3 Today’s Goals… I can explain how scientists use evidence to create models of the Earth’s interior. I can describe the layers of the Earth.

4 What do you already know?
True or False Scientists have created models of the Earth by drilling holes to the center of the Earth All of the Earth is solid The Earth’s highest temperature is at its center. Pressure decreases as you go toward the center of the Earth The lithosphere is another name for the inner core.

5 Creating A Model What is inside the box?
How might you figure this out without opening it? Indirect Observation

6 Using Seismic Waves Earthquakes carry energy through waves
Waves move differently through different materials Travels faster in solid rock than in liquid The waves refract when they move from solids to liquids

7 Using Rock Clues Certain rocks on Earth’s surface are made from materials thought to be deep inside of the Earth

8 Layers of the Earth Inner Core Outer Core Mantle Crust

9 Inner Core Solid and dense Mostly made of iron
When seismic waves reach this layer they speed up – meaning it is solid Hottest part of Earth Experience a lot of pressure

10 Outer Core Mostly molten (liquid) metal
Stops one kind of seismic wave and slows down another

11 Mantle Largest layer Solid but flows, similar to silly putty

12 Crust Mostly thin, can vary
All features on earth’s surface are part of the crust The upper part of the mantle and the crust make up the lithosphere

13 Crust The crust is broken up into pieces called tectonic plates
These plates can “float” on the mantle

14 Patterns in Earth’s Structure
Back of Foldable As you go from the crust to the inner core: Density, Temperature, and Pressure INCREASE

15 Now what do you know? True or False
Scientists have created models of the Earth by drilling holes to the center of the Earth All of the Earth is solid The Earth’s highest temperature is at its center. Pressure decreases as you go toward the center of the Earth The lithosphere is another name for the inner core.
