Can pop culture educate & advocate for a good cause? Examples… Research & Present (starting May 6): a piece of music (pop, protest, or other) that teaches us about a social issue in the country/region in which it is popular First research periods: today and Tuesday…

2 Chosen song? Here’s what to prepare for your presentation
Your presentation needs to include the following: Video version of song (created by you or available on Internet/Youtube) English lyrics to song (preferably viewable while we listen to song) Biography of the artist/group, with map showing city & country of origin At least 5 researched facts about the social issue(s) raised by the song (ex. statistics, compelling news item, explanations) Your comments on why you chose this song

3 First research notes & Song Reservation assignment: 10 points
Visit at least 2 of the websites (below) to accumulate 10 point form notes which include: Due to submit: Friday, May 3 Learn about the music, the songs and the artists mentioned in each of TWO countries / webpages (open links on slide following) and record The name of the country or region and one interesting detail about protest music there (in general) The name of a notable protest song and its artist 4 points you learned about this artist and/or song (ex. style of music, subject of lyrics, memorable line or aspect of music Close your assignment by naming the ARTIST and SONG you wish to research/present in class

Iraq, Ten Years On: 7 Songs Inspired By The War » The overall theme of these protest songs: Was the 2002 Invasion of Iraq worth it? Article describes & shows songs by: Dixie Chicks, Neil Young, Jack Johnson & Carrie Underwood, among others Neil Young recorded Living with War in only nine days, in response to the US decision to invade Iraq in 2002 By the end of the first 8 months of the invasion, already almost 3000 American troops in Iraq had been killed, a number which does not even COUNT the number of Iraqi (civilians) who have died as a result of the armed intervention
