Introduction to your field trip.
Weaselhead Education Programs Introduction to your field trip.
2
The Weaselhead/Glenmore Park Preservation Society was formed in 1994.
It works to ensure all Calgarians understand the importance of natural landscapes in sustaining life, and help protect the native plants and animals in the Park.
4
Weaselhead Water One in five Albertans get their drinking water from the Weaselhead area.
5
Weaselhead Plants and Animals
With five different habitats in the Park there are homes for over 1000 different species of plants and animals.
6
Pre-trip Preparation Set up a journal for the day. Include your worksheets and an extra sheet for plant and animal observations. Be sure you have something to write on.
7
What else to bring? Tough shoes or hiking boots (not your best trainers – it may be muddy!) Layered clothing for cold, wet or hot weather Full water bottle (not just a juice box!) Snack and lunch (if coming for a full day) Something to sit on - if you don’t want to sit on the ground!
8
Help us protect the Park
Don’t remove natural items from the area - everything in the Park has to stay there! Plants, insects, mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians can be observed but not damaged or hurt in any way… Leave no trace of your visit. All litter must be put in your back-pack and brought out by… YOU Help us protect the Park
9
Behaviour Expectations
No unsafe behaviour such as tripping, wrestling, and teasing… Listen to the instructor and participate in group discussions. Adult volunteers are expected to help with activities and in keeping students safe and following the rules. (Sorry - pets are not permitted on the field trip! )

What plants grow in the Weaselhead? What lives in the wetlands?
Trees and shrubs, herbaceous and woody plants, terrestrial and aquatic plants… What lives in the wetlands? Insects (adults, larvae, nymphs, eggs), snails, leeches, fish, muskrats, beavers…. What will we see? Depends on where we go, where we look, the time of year, the weather on the day… and how quiet your are!
11
Terms to know Bio = living Diversity = Variety of different things
Biodiversity: the variety or abundance of different living things Co-existance: living together peacefully in spite of differences Goal = coexist with the plants and animals you find in Calgary – this is their home too!
