4 Advanced Placement ®: The Basics
AP® courses are college-level courses offered in high school Courses reflect what is taught in top introductory college courses Students have the option of taking AP Exams at the end of the course (May 6th – 17th), measuring their mastery of college- level work A score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam can earn students college credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college Presenter can add to this information with the following points: Advanced Placement® is a program developed and overseen by the College Board, the not-for-profit organization that is responsible for the PSAT/NMSQT®, SAT®, and other programs and services in college readiness and college success that help more than seven million students each year prepare for a successful transition to college.

8 What if AP is not for me? Any student is allowed to sign up for Pre-AP or AP courses. Conversation with student’s teacher is crucial AFTER the 4th week in a Pre-AP/AP course, we offer a level change opportunity for students to drop to on-level. Parent must have a conference with the teacher Student must attend tutorials weekly No missing work/Retake any exam grades below a 70 Committee meets to decide if it is an academically inappropriate placement for the student – will approve or deny the change based on multiple pieces of data

9 AP versus Dual Credit GPA AP is weighted and calculates into GPA
Dual Credit does not calculate into GPA College Credit Pass AP class, must take AP exam and score 3+ for college credit Pass Dual Credit, earn college credit Access to instructor AP = easy access Dual Credit = they will not speak with parents, students are treated as college students and FERPA prohibits it NOTE: Students should remain in Pre AP classes if they plan to consider AP or Dual Credit Classes

10 How to sign up for an AP exam
The exam fee this year will be $80 per exam or $15 for students who qualify for free/reduced lunch. If you haven’t applied or reapplied for free/reduced lunch, please do so at Registration is completed online through Total Registration: Registration will close Friday, March 1st. Students will not be allowed to register for exams past this window. Exams must be paid for no later than March 8th. Any exams not paid for will be canceled. AP Remind101 Text the to to join.

11 AP® Exams AP Exams are administered by schools worldwide on set dates in May each year. This year, exams will be given May 6th -17th. Please visit for the detailed testing calendar. Exams are typically 2–3 hours and include: Multiple-choice questions Free-response items such as essays, problem solving, document-based questions and oral response

12 Changes in AP Program 2019-2020 Earlier exam registration and payment
Next year…registration is moving to fall 2019 Moving the exam-making decision toward the start of the AP course will benefit students and boost the learning culture in AP classrooms. Priority deadline is October 2019 (TBA). Final deadline is November 15th. Students who register after November 15th for year-long AP courses will be charged an additional $40. Students will be required to put a down payment ($40 per exam) towards exams by November 15th. (EX) A student taking 3 exams will pay $120 by November 15th and the remaining balance by March. Students on Free/Reduced lunch will pay in full for exams by November 15th. Studies show that: AP-ready students are more likely to earn a score of 3 or higher Students are more likely to take the exam Educators report seeing increased engagement from students who are “in it to win it” from the start of the course. WHY?
