1 Chapter 5.4 Achievements of China

2 I. The Silk Road Emperor Wudi’s travels brought the Chinese into contact with Central Asia Trade of goods such as grapes, walnuts, and garlic brought them closer together Because of this thousands of miles of trade routes formed called the Silk Road

3 A. Connecting Roads Silk Road spanned nearly 4000 miles or the same distance from Hawaii to Chicago These roads traveled through Mountains, desert, and even across many rivers, and it just continued to expand

4 B. A Route for Goods Very few even traveled the whole road due to its vast length but goods exchanged hands and often made it to the end With each trade or exchange the price went up People began to learn the art of negotiation

5 Silk Road earned its name from the over abundance of silk or valuable cloth traded by many
Farms learned to raise silk worms or the caterpillars that make silk Then they found ways to weave and dye cloth for trade. Think of all the things they could make with this(give examples) However these methods were secret and if you told you could have been killed

6 C. A Route for Ideas Goods weren’t the only things that were traded, ideas were passed by missionaries Give examples of types of ideas that can spread

7 II. Tradition and Learning
Traditional ideas flourished and teachings of people like Confucius returned This caused many to begin writing things down called (history)thus we know about this time period

8 A. Respect for learning When problems hit China traditions went out the window Leaders like Confucius created ideas like civil service which gave jobs to civilians to help get the government and economy back on track This also created a new focus on education

9 B. History of China Until the Han Dynasty China had little knowledge of the past, they only knew myths Scholar Sima Qian spent his life writing the history of China from mythical times to current day

10 III Han Technology Han governments were stable and focused on improving society Because of this During this time China became the most advanced Society Seismograph crossbow

11 A. Advances in Technology
They created new ways of writing on paper, iron plows, rudders to steer ships, wheel barrow, poetry, herbal medicine, and anatomy

12 B. Invention of Paper At first wooden scrolls and animal bones were used to keep records Eventually they wrote on silk until they invented a new style of paper They created this from tree bark, hemp, and old rags These were soaked in water and dried flat This was another way to influence eduaction
