2 Key Vocabulary Function: a relationship that assigns one output value to each input value. Function rule: an equation that describes a function.

4 Evaluating a Function Rule from a Table
The input will be the top numbers of the table or the numbers to the left of the table. They are usually the x value. The output will be the bottom numbers of the table or the numbers to the right of the table. They are usually the y value. They will give an equation before or after the table to help fill it in.

5 Example x 1 2 3 4 5 6 y Do you notice a pattern emerging on the table? If so what is it? The table is going up by 2, so the next numbers will be 12, 14, 16…

6 Using Function Notation
First they will give an equation in notation form. F(x) is a fancy way to say y. The f(5) means that the x at this point of the equation is 5, so we replace the x with 5 Then follow PEMDAS and solve for what f(5) would be.

7 Let’s Practice Use f(x) = 2x + 3 for the following problems F(-2)
