1.2 The Many Uses of Fluids

2 Fluids A fluid is anything that has no fixed shape and can flow.
Fluids are useful to transport, process and use other materials. A mixture of water and a solid is called a slurry. Ex: Oil Sands

3 Fluids become Solids Many things we see and use as solids were originally prepared as fluids. Ex. Glass Manufactured by heating a mixture of substances including sand and limestone

4 Fluids can hold other materials
The ability of fluids to spread or flow and to carry other materials makes them very useful Ex: Toothpaste Contains powdered materials, detergents, flouride, binders, and coloring and flavoring
