Effects: Sherman’s tactic Total war – Destroy the enemy and everything that supports them Rail lines, crops, burned and looted towns Kicked out civilians presidential election Lincoln defeated George McClellan for reelection in 1864 because Northerners thought the end of the war was close Cool stuff: 60 miles wide and 300 miles long Sherman “gave” Savannah to Lincoln as a Christmas gift in 1864

Dates: April 9, 1865 State: Virginia Causes: Lee’s Action Lee left Richmond undefended after several Union victories in Virginia Union control Union captured Richmond on April 3rd Lee’s realization Although he still wanted to fight, Lee knew it was hopeless, so he sent a note of surrender to Grant

Winner: Union Effects: 4 years… The Civil War was over 2-4. Examples of Grant’s Kindness Grant fed hungry Confederate soldiers Grant allowed confederates to return home in peace Confederate soldiers were allowed to take their private possessions and horses with them

Cool stuff: Surrender happened at Wilmer McLean’s house. McLean moved to Appomattox from the town of Manassas after the First Bull Run was fought on his property. The war began and ended at his home. Lee arrived early, was dressed in a crisp gray uniform with an engraved sword Grant had mud on his uniform and clothes when he arrived 30 minutes later Grant reminded Lee they had met during the Mexican War and said “our conversation grew so pleasant that I almost forgot the object of our meeting”
