Latent Heat of Phase Changes
3
There are 3 phases (states) of matter.
Solid- definite shape and volume, has the least energy (ice) Liquid- takes the shape of its container and has a definite volume, more energy (water) Gas- takes the shape of its container and its volume can change, even more energy (water vapor) can never be seen !!!!!!
4
Latent heat is the energy needed to change from one phase to another.
Example: in order for ice to change into water it must gain energy While a phase change is happening all the energy is being used to change the phase and the temperature remains constant.
5
Phase from Phase to Phase change name Latent Heat
There are 4 phase changes : Phase from Phase to Phase change name Latent Heat Solid Liquid Melt Gain Vaporization Liquid Gas Gain Examples: boiling and evaporation Gas Liquid Condensation Lost Liquid Solid Freeze Lost
