What is the digestive system?
The digestive system is the name of the journey that our food takes through our body. Read on to find out what journey your food takes.

Where does the food start?
The foods first step through your body starts in your mouth.

How do you break your food down?
The way we break down our food is teeth! They are very, very important in the digestive system as you need them to break down your food.

Incisors The Incisors are for cutting your food. .
Incisors cut up our food just like scissors

There are very important for chewing and grinding your food.
Molars When you cut the food with your incisors the food your eating goes to the back of your mouth; where it meets the molars. There are very important for chewing and grinding your food.

Canine The canines are for ripping and tearing.
Lions have big canines because they rip and tear their meat.

Saliva! Oh yes!!! This strange substance is one of the most important things your body provides. It is full of Amylase

Enzymesmes Enzymes are produced in the liver.
Enzymes are small substances that help you break down your food. There are three different types of enzymes that all contribute to the digestive system.

Did you know that enzymes are produced by cells?
Amylase Did you know that enzymes are produced by cells? Amylase is part of saliva and is in your mouth. It is especially designed to break down carbohydrates.

Remember PROTEASE is used to break down PROTEIN!!!
Protease is found in your stomach. It is used to break down all of the protein that you eat. Handy Hint Remember PROTEASE is used to break down PROTEIN!!!

Lipase This final but very important substance is used for breaking down all of the fat you eat. It is found in the small intestine. This small intestine is where all of the Lipase is found.

Next… So now we've eaten our food where does it go next?
Right down the Oeophagus tube.

Fun Facts! Our salivary glands produce around 1.5 litres of saliva each day! The reason that faeces is brown and urine is yellow is all because of dead red blood cells. Did you know that your stomach has 52 million glands in it!
