2 Figure 1 Mycobacterial PGLs Partner with Macrophages to Promote Nerve Demyelination Tissue resident macrophages (Mɸs) phagocytose PGL-1 expressing Mycobacterium leprae (Mlep). PGL-mediated activation of the intracellular PAMP sensor STING induces CCL2 production, which recruits permissive CCR2-expressing monocytes to sustain infection. Infected and uninfected macrophages also leave the tissue and patrol nerve axons, where Mlep PGL-1 induces expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and nitric oxide (NO) production in infected macrophages.
