Presentation on theme: "What will our reaction be?"— Presentation transcript:

1 There are times in life when we will become aware that we have sinned, by one means or another.
What will our reaction be? What shall we do when it dawns on us that we have failed, that we have fallen short?

2 Matthew 27:4; 2 Samuel 12:13 “I Have Sinned”

3 I Have Sinned… Become deeply depressed; perhaps commit suicide like Judas (Matthew 27:3-10). Often we feel worthless, that we have failed. There is the temptation to quit, to say, “What’s the use?” What is accomplished by such a reaction? Nothing constructive, no atonement. Realize that God can forgive sin, no matter how black it may be!

4 I Have Sinned… Get angry as the Jews did (Acts 7:51-54).
Other examples: Asa and Hanani (2 Chronicles 16:7-10). Ahab and Micaiah (1 Kings 22:27-28). Joash and Zechariah (2 Chronicles 24:20-22). There are people who do not like anyone to point out their wrongs, and they will hate anyone who does.

5 I Have Sinned… Yes, I have sinned, and am sorry I got caught (1 Samuel 15:24). Many people think that if they can just keep people from knowing their wrongs, that is all that is important. They would never repent if they were not caught.

6 I Have Sinned… Do as David did (2 Samuel 11; 12:1-23)
Suppose no one had reproved him; would he have repented? The 51st Psalm shows that David was being consumed with guilt. David was a good man but he attempted a cover-up. He learned the meaning of the expression, “Be sure your sin will find you out”.

7 Two kinds of sorrow for sin:
Godly sorrow (2 Corinthians 7:10a). For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. (2 Cor. 7:10) The Christian should be of such a frame of mind that when his wrong is pointed out, he is sorry because he has been unfaithful to God. He has crucified the Son of God again (Hebrews 6:6).

8 Two kinds of sorrow for sin:
Sorrow of this world (2 Corinthians 7:10b). For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. (2 Cor. 7:10) Godly sorrow works repentance. Worldly sorrow brings anger and resentment.

9 I Have Sinned… Become deeply depressed…? Get angry…?
Be sorry for getting caught…? Come to senses, realizing that sin has consequences, and there will be no escaping them. Act upon godly sorrow, and do works befitting repentance, immediately!

10 John 3:3-5 (NKJV) Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." 4 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" 5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
