It is often best to have the numbers possible when we write fractions 12 20 3 5 Instead of we would have We have cancelled the fractions down, by dividing top and bottom numbers by the same number (in this case 4)

13 Finding Fractions of Amounts
2 7 If you are asked for of an amount 1 7 2 7 Find by dividing by 7 and then find by multiplying by 2. 2 7 To find of 35: 35 ÷ 7 = x 2 = 10 2 7 of 35 is 10

5 9 If you are asked for of an amount 1 9 5 9 Find by dividing by 9 and then find by multiplying by 5. 5 9 To find of 63: 63 ÷ 9 = x 7 = 35 5 9 of 63 = 35

20 An improper fraction is when the ‘numerator’ is bigger than the ‘denominator’.

21 How to change a mixed number to an improper fraction:
1 3 7 4 Whole number (1) x Denominator (4) + Numerator (3) = 7 7 becomes the numerator The denominator stays the same as in the mixed number, in this case 4.

22 How to change a mixed number to an improper fraction:
2 4 14 5 Whole number (2) x Denominator (5) + Numerator (3) = 14 14 becomes the numerator The denominator stays the same as in the mixed number, in this case 5.

23 Now you know the rule, let’s just use numbers:
3 3 24 7 3 x 7 3 + = 24

24 Adding and subtracting fractions
make sure the bottom numbers are the same by finding a common denominator. add or subtract the numerators (top numbers). Put your answer over the common denominator you found in step one. simplify the fraction if needed
