Why is it significant to the plot and conflict that the American is a naturalist, or scientist who studies nature? . The fact that the American is a naturalist is significant to the plot because he studies nature and animals and is familiar with animals’ behavior. When the servant placed the bowl of milk outside, he knew (because of his background) that it was to bait a snake. With this knowledge, he is able to cautiously direct the conversation to a “game” where everyone at the table must sit silently and still or forfeit money. By doing this, he keeps the guests safe until the snake leaves for the milk.
